Black Protest in Iceland

On the 3rd of October Polish women – inspired by Icelandic women’s strike from 1975 – refused to work in protest against new proposal for a total ban on abortion in Poland.

The demonstrations were held around the country, but also in many cities abroad, where Polish migrants were gathering in support with protesters in Poland. Justyna Grosel and Marta Niebieszczańska, one of the main organizes of protests in Reykjavik presented the main objectives of the protests and the course of demonstrations in Iceland at the project’s open lecture series at the University of Iceland on 12th of December. Brynhildur Heiðar- og Ómarsdóttir, chairman of the Icelandic Women’s Rights Association shared her comments to the presentation.
